Welcome to Dallam and Hartley County Cooperative Extension located in the northwest corner of the Texas Panhandle. Noted as the state's county leader in wheat and corn production, the county seat Dalhart straddles Dallam and Hartley counties. At 3985 feet elevation Dalhart is uniquely located near four other states- New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Dalhart is just 85 miles northwest of Amarillo, 46 miles southeast of Clayton, New Mexico and 71 miles southwest of Guymon, Oklahoma. Dalhart serves as the centerpiece of the bi-county area that also includes the cities of Texline and Kerrick in Dallam County and Hartley and Channing in Hartley County.

The Dallam/Hartley bi-county area is blessed with a mild climate. Average daytime high in the winter is about 55 degrees, while in the summer the average daytime high is a dry 85 degrees with nights cooling to the 60s. Winds are south to southwesterly most of the year. In the winter, northerly winds predominate. Average annual rainfall is 18 inches, which includes 10-12 inches of snowfall during the winter. The growing season lasts approximately 178 days, with the average last frost on April 23 and the average first frost on October 18.

Dalhart taking its name from the two counties in which it lies, was briefly known as Twist Junction and then as Denrock. Dalhart was first incorporated in 1902.

The XIT Ranch, no longer in existence, consisted of 3 million acres which the Texas state government deeded to an investment group in Chicago in exchange for building the Texas State Capitol in 1888.

The Extension Program, directed by the Dallam County Extension Program Council, strives to serve a population who derives its main income from production agriculture mainly wheat, corn, cattle, and swine. Our physical address is known by local residents as the old SPS building on 401 Denrock. This office space houses the Dallam County Justice of the Peace and the Dallam County Cooperative Extension.

Mission: To provide quality, relevant outreach and continuing education programs and services to the people of Dallam County.
